Cancún, Quintana Roo January 9, 2023.- The champion is back and starting this Wednesday he will begin the defense of his title against Coyotes de Tlaxcala at the 'Tlahuicole' stadium.
Cancún FC achieved a great second semester in 2023, which meant they gained overall leadership and later became monarchs for the first time in their history. Now, in the 2024 Clausura Tournament, they will seek to repeat their success, practically with the same squad, since they only released the Guadalajara goalkeeper, Gustavo Gutiérrez, and the Cancun midfielder, Jorge Díaz Price, respectively.
“We are going to start the new tournament with the same ambition to win to achieve the two-time championship.
We want this city to take football more affectionately to make our fans happy,” explained the African, Cheick Traore, a figure in the Final against the Iron Colts of Atlante.
In eight tournaments so far, it will be the seventh time that the Iguanas will open the campaign as a visitor. The only one they did as hosts was in their debut season, in the Apertura 2020, when they beat Tampico Madero (1-0) on August 20.
The squad headed by the professor, Luis Arce, will visit Tlaxcalteca territory for the fourth time, however, in the previous semester, the pack was the only one that beat the Caribbean (1-2) at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' stadium, the Wednesday, September 6.
“We have the heart to win at home, we will go out with everything in search of the first three points,” he stated.
Coyotes not
win at home
The Apertura 2023 was a nightmare for Tlaxcala. Only a couple of victories were added during the semester (one at home and another as a visitor, precisely the aforementioned against the Iguanas).
In six of the seven duels they drew at the 'Tlahuicole', those led by Javier Contreras suffered defeat. The last time they imposed conditions (2-1) was on Saturday, September 16 (ninth matchday) against Alebrijes de Oaxaca.
Curiously, his star reinforcement is a man from Quintana Roo: Ernesto 'Charol' Reyes, from Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
