CANCÚN FC TRIUMPHS AGAINST CORRECAMINOS IN ITS DEBUT, IN THE CLAUSURA 2025 OF THE EXPANSION LEAGUE

The Iguanas beat the Tamaulipas team (2-1) on the opening day of the competition, at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' stadium

Cancún, Quintana Roo, January 11, 2025.- Cancún FC began its activity of the year with a victory (2-1) against Correcaminos of the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas, at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' stadium.

For the Caribbeans, it was their first home start since 2020, their debut season. From that point on, they never hosted the opening game.

In addition to the aforementioned match against the northern team, there are still six matches to be played as host, all on 'Sábados de la Iguana', as occurred in the previous semester.

At 15', Gustavo Gutiérrez spectacularly deflected captain Gerardo Moreno's shot with one hand, preventing Tamaulipas from scoring.

A minute after Gutiérrez's great save, Sergio Treviño opened the scoring with a header from Sergio Treviño.

It was the 30th minute when Colombian José Rodríguez tested goalkeeper Rubén Castellanos with a shot in the small area, which was deflected by the goalkeeper and hit the base of the left post.

In the last play of the first half, the Iguanas tied the game (1-1) with a header from Axl Padilla, to the base of Castellanos' left post.

In the second half, Cancún FC came out determined to win. First, Mauro Guadarrama ran at full speed through the center of the field. Unfortunately for the Cancunense, he tripped, uncomfortable with the marking exerted by the orange defense.

Then, another player from Cancun, Jorge Díaz Price, executed a very tight corner kick from the right, which was deflected with great difficulty by the goalkeeper, Castellanos.

Without a doubt, the clearest opportunity was the one Johan Alonzo had in the 69th minute, with a cross shot to the far post, when he had an open goal.

Correcaminos came close to scoring the second goal at 79' with a powerful shot from Jonathan Gámez, but the goalkeeper, Gustavo Gutiérrez, made a spectacular save with both hands, to the right corner. The Iguanas were saved!

It seemed that the match would end in a draw, until Mauro Guadarrama appeared in the 87th minute to make the difference.

On five occasions that the Cancun team hosted the Tamaulipas team at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo', they won three times (2-0 in the Apertura 2020, 2-1 in the Apertura 2023 and now 2-1), in exchange for a couple of setbacks, for an identical (0-1) in the Apertura 2021 and Clausura 2023, in that order.

On the second day, the Iguanas will visit the Alteños de Tepatitlán, on Friday, January 17 at the 'Gregorio 'Tepa' Gomez' stadium.
